Bengalees without desserts is unimaginable. Especially when it is Kolkatan’s very favourite sandesh what else is wanted! Nothing can match the taste of sandesh, the dry dessert of Bengal. Those who have a sweet tooth may have an account of the famous confectioneries in Kolkata. Among all those few are a century old still maintaining the heritage and glory. Girish Chandra Dey and Nakur Chandra Nandi belongs to the oldest sweatmeat shop list satisfying the taste buds of thousands of people for 174years. Here we can find some of the finest sandesh of Kolkata which is delicate and creamy with a minute grain that melts gradually in mouth.


The speciality and uniqueness of the shop is it only deals with one item- Sandesh. Girish Ch. Dey the famous confectioner initiated the business in 1844, later his son-in-law Nakur Ch. Nandy who came from Hoogly joined the business as a partner. Such joint venture of the in-laws flourished with time. The taste and name both started to get renowned. In the mid 20th century their sandesh captured the heart of Bengal and also they reached the national level.  Their taste captivated all of the sweet lovers’ lust for desserts. Pratip Nandy and Pranab Nandy are running the business presently. They are the fouth generation of the founders. Even the fifth generation consisting of Partha Nandy, Rana Nandy, Prajesh Nandy are also equally responsible and want to take the helm of the future management eagerly.




Karapaak er sandesh(hard baked sweets) was famous item of the initial days. This is a shop where you would see a perfect blend of heritage and modernity. With time the taste changes, the demand changes. This sweetshop upgraded itself to be updated in serving customers’ demand. Their efforts are seen clearly in their servings. Where there was only kara paak and norom paak initially at present it caters around 60 items of sandesh. Yeah! Only sandesh. Starting from Jalbhara, Parijat, Dilkhush, Chandrapuli, Gurer Sandesh to Sachin sandesh, Sourav sandesh, Mango mousumi, Black forest, Malai roll, Chocholate items, Rose, Strawberry, Coffee sandesh and many more is there. From traditional common items to new uncommon additions all you can get here to nurture your favour for sweets. Especially the Sandhek is their patent and catchy item, sandhek is actually made combining the concept of cake and sandesh which actually looks like a cake but tastes like a sandesh.



Their business has spread their wings around the country, their name has crossed the geographical boundary. Famous chefs Ranveer Brar, Vikash Khanna and actor David Racco visited their place to taste the heritage. The Chocolate, Parijat and Mousumi sandesh were among the dessert item in Abhishek-Aiswariya’s reception. A 34kg Sandhek was also ordered for the celebration party of Kolkata Knight Rider. CM of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee gifted Nakur’s kancha golla and parijat to US Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton. Besides, Satyajit Roy and Roy family members, Uttam Kumar, Rituparno Ghosh former PM Rajib Gandhi and many more were fond of their sandesh and still are.

The Inventor of Rosogolla: Nobin Chandra Das

        [From 1866] This sweetshop is counted among the oldest sweetmeat sellers of Kolkata. More than 150 years is indeed mentionable! A notable Bengali confectioner Nobin Chandra Das who was a cultural icon of mid 19 th century established the shop in 1866 in Sobhabazar. He was keen to invent something new in the history of sweets. Two years later with his innovative recipe and technique he made Rosogolla for the first time in 1868. This famous personality was known as Colombus of Rosogolla as he introduced this syrupy, mouth-watering dessert first. Nahoum's & Sons - The only Jewish confectionery in Kolkata

[From 1902] A confectionary probably the last vestige of Jewish Heritage in Kolkata still shimmers with their glorious presentation. The decoration of the shop, the same teakwood furniture sprinkles the nostalgia of traditional values whenever we visit the place. It is none other than Nahoum & Sons- the internationally known Jewish bakery serving the citizens with its lip-smacking items.  This bakery was established by Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Baghdadi Jew in the year 1902.
