The 142 years of nostalgia- Coffee House

[From 1876]

In my list of oldest eateries in Kolkata Coffee House stands the second. The amalgamation of heritage and modernity, fame and name, class and ambience is very clear to every visitor of this century. Every chair, coffee cups, every bricks here are the spectators of poetical debates, romantic couple fights, political planning and many more.

This is a place where you can visit anytime of a month even when you have a little penny left in your pocket. Nothing else can be a perfect choice for destination to go for in such a reasonable price. Let’s check out the menu once-

The name coffee House is given by Central Government of India in 1947. It was established as Albert Hall in April 1876. But the Indian Coffee House was under threat of closure by mid 1950s. The workers and other supporters came together in order to make it a cooperative effort and thus the beloved coffee adda was saved.

When a cafe becomes a meeting place of scholars, intellectuals, poets, artists its significance upswings to an unattainable level. Starting from Rabindranath Tagore to Satyajit Roy, Amartya Sen, Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen and Sunil Gangopadhyay, Subhash Mukhopadhyay, Shakti Chattopadhyay were the visitors, every inch of this mansion is the witness of great gatherings, the adda sessions.
But one common feedback which I got from most of the current visitors is the detoriated food quality. Especially those who are coming from many decades past clarified the change better. But there is also a common opinion which I got from almost everyone that “It’s just not a cafe, it’s an emotion.”

A coffee cup at every table is no new here an when it is Infusion not any frappe or cappuchino can beat the authenticity.

Its cozy and casual appearance is its speciality. One would surely be transported to the primitive era of coffee house addas. This heritage is still a desired destination to everyone.

Nahoum's & Sons - The only Jewish confectionery in Kolkata

[From 1902] A confectionary probably the last vestige of Jewish Heritage in Kolkata still shimmers with their glorious presentation. The decoration of the shop, the same teakwood furniture sprinkles the nostalgia of traditional values whenever we visit the place. It is none other than Nahoum & Sons- the internationally known Jewish bakery serving the citizens with its lip-smacking items.  This bakery was established by Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Baghdadi Jew in the year 1902. The 116 years old confectionary is presently run by Isaac Nahoum- the descendant of the founder. In 2013 David Nahoum, the third generation owner of the bakery passed away and as he had no children his brother Isaac Nahoum took the noble responsibility to conserve the heritage. Once Kolkata used to be a residence for the Jewish community; though it was much less – around 4000. Their existence was prominent in between the late 18 th and mid 20 th century. At present this reduced to a h...
